Anytime I am struggling with a decision, I always fall back to one key question in my decision matrix — Will this give me energy or take it away?

This question works for decisions in both my personal and professional lives.

I even use this question when looking at my personal relationships. Particularly with my friendships, where I like my close friends to be people who give me energy rather than constantly taking it from me. For example, people who are constantly unhappy tend to drain my energy. Those people I either avoid or limit my exposure to.

Now, to be fair, life is not always black and white. Life isn’t always even or fair. I don’t expect all of my relationships to be 50/50. But they can’t be 95/5 either.

This thought process or piece of your decision matrix works with business ideas as well. If an idea you are working on is more of a grind than something that energizes you, it might be best to find something else to work on.

Of course, there are other questions that I often include in my decision matrix. But this one question has never failed me.

Let me know how it works for you.
